Welcome! My name is Toby Deutsch, I am a wife, a mom of two boys, and a major birth nerd. Let me tell you why (as in the birth nerd part).
I prepared differently for two different births. My pregnancies felt different, my births felt different, and the postpartum experience; very different.
But, I was having the same nausea, gained the same amount of weight, had the same insomnia, gave birth at the same gestational week (41), and both babies weighed the same (8.9 and 8.6 lbs.).
Some might say that the difference was that it was my second time around the block. Well, yes. But also, no. You see, prior to my second pregnancy, I was the most anxious I had ever been. A bunch of different challenges piled on top of each other did not make for a great mental cocktail. But I went on to have the most incredible pregnancy and birth.
The secret was not drinking red raspberry leaf tea, doing prenatal yoga, or hiring a doula. Those were all complimentary and very beneficial.
The key to my mental, emotional, and physical success was all upstairs, in my brain. I took my brain to the gym with a specific workout regimen to get targeted results. I wanted a skinny amygdala (the part of the brain associated with anxiety, fear, panic, and irrational thinking), I wanted a strong prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain associated with executive functioning, decision making, and rational thinking), and I wanted a Zen limbic system (the emotion center of the nervous system).
Sounds nuts, huh? Well, there is scientific evidence backing all of this. The human brain can adapt and change its structure with the help of neuroplasticity. Our brains are malleable. In pregnancy, the brain is even more vulnerable to change thanks to all the amazing hormones that are circulating in our bodies. We want to take advantage of these hormones to speed up positive changes in our brains to prepare for the most wonderful, empowering, birth and postpartum.
After witnessing firsthand the life-changing effect that brain training had on my life, I wanted to share it with the world.
So, I present to you Gentle Beginnings. A childbirth education program that stacks the odds in your favor of having a positive birth experience, regardless of the journey it takes. Yes, you will learn different methods such as breathing techniques, physical comfort measures, and all the latest evidence-based research and education, but the most important method you will be learning will be mindset.
Honored to work with you,
Toby
The mind is your most powerful muscle in birth, and like any muscle, it needs to be trained. At Gentle Beginnings, we focus on mental preparation to help you approach birth with calm, clarity, and confidence. Through mindfulness practices, positive affirmations, and hypnosis techniques, we teach you how to quiet fear, reframe your mindset, and stay grounded throughout your journey. These tools help create new thought patterns so that when labor begins, your mind becomes your strongest support system—not your barrier.
Preparing your body for birth is just as important as preparing your mind. In our physical prep sessions, we focus on exercises and movements that support a more comfortable pregnancy and an easier birth. You'll learn techniques to encourage optimal fetal positioning, reduce common aches and pains, and create balance and alignment in your body. From gentle stretches to targeted movements, everything we do is designed to help baby find the best position for birth—and help you feel strong, open, and ready.
You deserve to be heard, respected, and actively involved in every decision around your birth and postpartum care. Advocacy is about knowing your rights, understanding your options, and confidently using your voice. At Gentle Beginnings, we help you get clear on your values, ask informed questions, and navigate your care with courage and clarity. Whether it’s writing a birth plan, setting boundaries, or speaking up in the moment, you’ll be equipped to advocate for yourself and your baby—because your experience matters.
The fourth trimester is a sacred time of healing, bonding, and deep transformation. At Gentle Beginnings, we help you prepare for this season with practical tools, emotional support, and nourishing guidance. You'll learn how to create a postpartum plan that prioritizes rest, recovery, and connection, along with simple, nutrient-rich food ideas to support your body’s healing and milk production. From setting realistic expectations to building your support network, we focus on helping you feel cared for—so you can care for your baby from a place of strength and balance.
Lactation is not something you have to master—it's something your body and baby already instinctively know how to do. Through the lens of biological nurturing, we return to the natural wisdom built into you both. In our lactation sessions, you'll learn how to create the right conditions for breastfeeding to unfold with ease—focusing on laid-back positions, skin-to-skin connection, and following your baby’s cues. It’s not about rigid rules or perfect latch techniques—it’s about trusting the process, honoring your instincts, and letting your baby lead the way.
